Indonesia memiliki keunggulan kelautan yang unik di dunia sebagai satu-satunya negara yang dilalui oleh sirkulasi arus laut global utama yang dikenal sebagai Indonesian Throughflow (ITF) atau Arus Lintas Indonesia (Arlindo).<br\/><br\/>Berbeda dengan wilayah perairan lain di dunia yang arusnya hanya dipengaruhi oleh pasang surut, arus laut di Indonesia merupakan kombinasi antara ITF\/Arlindo dan arus pasang surut yang memiliki kekuatan sebanding. Karakteristik unik ini menjadikan selat-selat di Indonesia sangat potensial untuk pengembangan Ocean Current Power Plants (PLTAL).<br\/><br\/>Meskipun memiliki potensi yang sangat besar, hingga saat ini belum ada sistem pemanfaatan energi laut yang berhasil dibangun di Indonesia, maupun feasibility study yang memenuhi standar internasional untuk pengembangan teknologi tersebut.
